The Boston Red Sox: Fluke or no fluke?

They currently sit at 60-56 and last year through 116 games they were 81-35. That's a drop off of 21 games. Meanwhile the Yankees are 74-39 and through 113 games last year they were 71-42. Not much difference (3 games). How do you drop 21 games with the same personnel? Conversely, how do you pick up 3 games with 25 guys spending considerable time on the IL? It's call baseball. And you gotta love it.

How shocking would it be for the Red Sox to follow up a 108 win Championship season with no postseason the next year? It shouldn't shock a soul. They haven't won back to back Championships without Babe Ruth on their squad. And the last 10 times they've been in the World Series (regardless of the outcome), they followed it up 8 times sitting home in October.

The Sawx lost again today. 62-58. If the Yankees go 22-22 to finish the season the Red Sox would have to go 37-5 to force a playoff. Of course if the Yankees go 22-22 the Rays might pass them. Boston certainly is not in an enviable position. They'll be lucky to get one of the wild cards (-7.5 on the 2nd WC).

If the Yankees go 22-22, Tampa would need to go 31-12 to pass them...

I don't know what happened to the red Sox. Last year they were clearly the best team. Just goes to show how hard it is to maintain it.

They had the magic last year, this year the Yankees have it.
Last year the Yankees struggled against Tampa and Baltimore, this year they crush them while Boston is struggling after dominating them.
Overall just a weird year for the Sox. It’s like they punted the season from the get go. Had a questionable pen last year, then let Kimbrel and Kelly go and didn’t do anything in free agency. Had a terrible scheduling decisions by first beginning the season with 11 straight road games, Then gave away 2 home games to the Yankees in London. Finally they did nothing at the trade deadline after beating up the Yankees and looking like they were back in it.
That lineup is just brutal but they just aren’t clicking. And now word is out that Betts may get traded because his contract demands are too high.

That will piss off some Red Sox fans!!! Combine that with JD possibly opting out and their lineup changes drastically.

To quote Dandy Don...."turn out the lights,
the party's over
they say that all good things must end"...…

The Red Sox were officially eliminated from the division race tonight. And they are 8 out of the 2nd wild card with 18 to play. But the funniest thing I heard tonight was courtesy of John Smoltz; "the Red Sox were the same team as last year but they had some injuries". Really? There ain't a team in the AL (or MLB for that matter) who can use the injury excuse after what the Yankees did this season.

Their 2018 HR leader has played 9 games this season
Their ace hasn't pitched yet
Their #2 relief pitcher of 2018 hasn't pitched yet
Aaron Judge missed almost 60 games
Sanchez has missed about 40
Didi has played less than either of them

I don't think any fanbase can use the injury excuse this season. Well, they can but......

Tick, tick, tick, tick...…
It's now only a matter of time. 10 games out of the 2nd Wild Card with 14 games remaining. The magic number for Boston's elimination is 4 (with Tampa and Oakland sitting at 89 wins). 7 with respect to Cleveland. A forgone conclusion at this point? Yup.

Well it's all but over for Boston. If the Indians or Rays win 1 more game (between them) the Red Sox are eliminated. Always a good day for Yankee fans.

Just need a win tonight from either Tampa or Cleveland.
Tampa playing Boston at home, not sure which I’d prefer. Tampa taking them out themselves or having Cleveland blowing out the Phillies so the Sox can see that they’re out on the scoreboard
