Wes Welker still wants to play, and the St. Louis Rams worked him out
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutd ... 06186.html

It's always startling how quickly NFL players fade away. Not everyone gets a retirement news conference because so few go out on their own terms. Most become "Oh yeah, that guy!"

Check a 2014 fantasy football draft for some of them. Montee Ball. Ben Tate. Knowshon Moreno. Steven Jackson. Jarrett Boykin. Hakeem Nicks. If you play in a league with any depth at all, they were all drafted. That was roughly 15 months ago. Now they're all looking for work, mostly forgotten as the NFL train moved past them.

Wes Welker was probably drafted about 60th in your fantasy league last year, give or take a few spots. People had high hopes for him with the Denver Broncos after he had 10 touchdowns in 2013. Then he had two touchdowns as his numbers dropped across the board in 2014, he became a free agent and although there were various reports of a workout here or there, he didn't sign with anyone. He didn't retire. It's just that the player who redefined the slot receiver position and should be considered for the Hall of Fame didn't have a job at age 34. Just like that he went from being a household name starring in shampoo commercials to being on the outside of the NFL looking in.

The St. Louis Rams worked out Welker on Monday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. They also worked out Nicks, who is in danger of becoming an "Oh yeah, that guy!" at age 27 if he doesn't resurface soon.

Welker told NFL.com last week that he was looking for the right opportunity and being selective.

"The frustrating part sometimes is you look out there on the field and you see guys who are playing, and you're like, 'I should be playing,'" Welker told NFL.com.

Welker has had health issues, specifically with concussions, and as a veteran of 11 seasons he wouldn't come cheap for any team, even at the minimum salary. Perhaps the Rams or someone else will sign Welker and pull him out of that group we forget about, like the Arizona Cardinals did with Chris Johnson. And it has worked out for Johnson, who is having a very nice season.

If the Rams don't sign Welker and the right situation doesn't come along for him, we'll just have to remember the stellar career he had, on the occasions we're reminded of it.

Rams work out Wes Welker, Hakeem Nicks, Vincent Brown
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... ent-brown/

The Rams are considering a veteran wide receiver to bolster their anemic passing game.

Toward that end, they’re working out veteran receivers Wes Welker, Hakeem Nicks and Vincent Brown today, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.

Welker said last week that he still should be playing. Once among the NFL’s best receivers, Welker has been out of the league all year amid concerns around the league that he has nothing left and may even be putting himself at risk if he plays again.

Nick has worked out with several teams this year but hasn’t been able to catch on anywhere. The Titans cut him at the end of the preseason.

Brown was once a very promising young receiver for the Chargers but was cut by the Chargers in 2014, lasted only seven games with the Raiders after that and was cut by the Colts after spending some time in Indianapolis this offseason.

St. Louis has gotten very little production from the wide receiver position this year. A veteran addition, even of a player past his prime, could make a difference.

Wes Welker works out for St. Louis Rams
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000 ... sf15077922

Wes Welker is getting another chance to catch on with a team.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Welker had a workout with the St. Louis Rams on Monday, according to a source informed of the situation. Welker has worked out for two other teams this season, but has yet to find a path to extend his career to a 12th season.

The news comes days after Rapoport spoke on the phone with Welker, who expressed puzzlement as to why he's been unable to catch on somewhere this season.

"The frustrating part sometimes is you look out there on the field and you see guys who are playing, and you're like, 'I should be playing,'" he said.

Welker, 34, was once the NFL's most prolific slot receiver, posting five seasons with 100 receptions and 1,000 yards with Tom Brady and the Patriots. But Welker's numbers dipped considerably after he signed with the Broncos prior to the 2013 season, and persistent concussion issues dotted the end of his Denver run.

ESPN.com reported that Hakeem Nicks and Vincent Brown also worked out for the Rams.

Unless someone's hurt that I don't know about, this is concerning. That they would think signing an old, used up vet is going to fix what's wrong with the offense is a sign that they really are clueless.

What it indicates to me is that the Rams WR's aren't able to get open. You see Foles looking but has to keep looking and finally bail out or throw the bomb.
If Foles is far sighted and can't read up close, then vet WR's won't help.
Again I think this is an indictment of WR 2 / WR3, and now that Bailey is on the pine that just about does it.
TE's might even see lighter coverages.
Love to force the opponents D to back away from the box..

SoCalRam78 wrote:Nicks and Welker would probably instantly be our second and third best receivers. If they show a pulse, I'd sign them both.

If Welker could find his car in the parking lot after the interview I'd sign him
