NFL Network's Steve Wyche: There's a Feeling Rams Will Leave St. Louis

The NFL owners meetings earlier this week in San Francisco revitalized the topic of the league's future in Los Angeles as the two stadium projects vie for a spot in the country's No. 2 media market.

NFL Network analyst and St. Louis native Stave Wyshe joined Prime Time with Joe Roderick and Willie Springer on Thursday to discuss the latest developments.

We've transcribed some notable excerpts from the interview. Listen to the whole thing below.

With the owners meetings done, which projects - Inglewood or Carson - do you think has the best chance at this point?

"I think everyone kind of is reading the tea leaves that the Inglewood project is absolutely the leader in the clubhouse. The big cookie crumb...that brings you there is the owners said LA would be considered to host a Super Bowl in 2020. For that to happen, the team has to relocate and be operable by 2018. That could not happen in Carson. They still have some environmental issues with the land...all projections are that facility would not be completed by then. Speaing to someone with great knowledge (of the Rams' situation and Inglewood), the second that they get approved - if that happens - they could put a shovel in the ground (and start building the stadium). That land is flattened and ready to go. I think the feeling is...the Rams are going to be coming."

There are reports Chargers owner Dean Spanos is more liked and it could be tough for Stan Kroenke to get approval from the owners. Would he pursue legal action if it came to that?

"He's not going to have to. Stan Kroenke is following everything the league has asked of him in terms of giving the parties in St. Louis every opportunity to come up with a plan to keep the team in St. Louis. Now the owners are saying (we've had this conversation enough), it's go time. You host cities...If you've got something to do to make your teams stay, you better do it in the next couple months. I think the feeling is...the owners are going to say final, concrete plans...before the end of the year. Because if not, we've got owners ready to spend their own personal money to build their own stadiums. The owners are done playing around...if the (cities) want to keep their teams at own, they better get on the stick."

On St. Louis stadium project:

"I hate it because I lived in St. Louis...they've got nothing substantial going there. I think the feeling coming out of this meeting is the Rams' project is much further along. I think Stan Kroenke wants to be gone, I think he wants the Rams in Los Angeles. I think people inside the organization are pretty much packing their bags because they see what's going on and they also think St. Louis...it could be too little, too late. The overwhelming feeling at the owners meetings...is that it's time. I do think for everybody...it's going to end up with some hurt feelings."

So listening to Roggin and Butts on the radio it seems Zelasko and Walker had a source that told them about August. Walker, at a social function, told this to Mayor Butts and Butts said something like, "sounds like you have a pretty good source." Walker took that as confirmation but Butts says he was just being flip in an informal setting and in no way was he confirming anything. It was his way of offering no comment. Butts maintains what he's always said, they're going to build the stadium. Anything else is up to the NFL and he has nothing to say about it.

I'm sure Mayor Butts knows more than he's saying but i also think he's too sharp to step out of line or speak out of turn so i'm inclined to believe him.

St. Louis is worried about not having an NFL team in the near future. Does the Chargers and Raiders hiring Carmen Policy for the Carson project help their chances because of the perception Stan Kroenke isn't well liked among the owners?

"If you're just talking about personal relationships, that may be true. You have to remember the Raiders for a long time were a pain in the assets for the NFL. (Al Davis) seemed to live for conflict. And some owners...don't have that much affection for the Raiders, who also have been a very bad franchise for a long time and (people wonder why they should be rewarded). There's also a problem - in my mind at least - with two teams from the same conference going in to that market. If you're looking at it from a distance - and this is not an anti-St. Louis comment - it makes more sense for one AFC team and one NFC team to go into the No. 2 TV market so CBS gets its slice of the pie and so does Fox. Plus, whether we like it or not, the Rams have a history in Los Angeles. And San Diego actually has a percentage of its fan base coming from the Orange County area. The Rams...I have to say it to be honest, that makes sense to me. I'm not rooting for it to happen. I hope the Dave Peacock group comes through and things work out...or at the very least if we lose our team perhaps the Jaguars or some other team is brought in to replace it. But if you look at it from a distance, what makes most sense is the Chargers and the Rams."
