Stafford is Ours

Excerpts from NFL.com story about Stafford "shooting his shot"....

"I've always wanted to play in those big games, I feel like I will excel in those situations," he said. "I wanted to shoot my shot."

With the Lions owners giving coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn a win-or-else ultimatum Dec. 2019, Stafford knew another tear-down and rebuild could be on the horizon.

"To be honest, Kelly and I probably started talking about it before last season," he said. "It was one of those things where, you know, we were hoping that, golly, let's go, I hope this thing takes off and we play great. But if it doesn't, you just knew what was going to happen. They were going to tear it down and rebuild.

"And anytime you switch GMs and a head coach, you know that they're going to want to bring their own people in, and that's going to take time. ."And I, frankly, didn't feel like I was the appropriate person to oversee that time

Stafford said that if he'd stayed in Detroit, the organization might have continued to be marred in mediocrity, never having a roster good enough to compete with the best, but never be bad enough to bottom out.

"In my mind, I felt like I was going to be able to help us go win six, seven, eight games, because I wasn't gonna let us lose more than that, you know?" he said. "But I probably wasn't good enough (by myself) to help us win more than that. And maybe we don't ever get those top picks that we needed."

During Stafford's tenure, the Lions drafted in the top-10 six times, including No. 7 overall this year.

The question in Detroit was never the quarterback's talent, but rather was it Stafford who couldn't raise the boats around him or the organization who failed to build a capable squad buffering the quarterback?

Stafford has a chance in L.A. to prove he is the signal-caller who can win the big game when given a chance to shoot that shot.

"Sometimes it's not the perfect storybook ending in the same place," he said. "But I can leave here knowing that I gave this team every damn thing I had."

Interesting take. Glad he wants a better shot. He deserves a better shot. He seems to say he could win 6 - 8 games on a shitty to mediocre team, while some question whether he is capable of elevating players around him. The Rams roster is certainly not mediocre but reading between the lines, apparently they're in need of a QB who can inspire the offense. I never bought in to the "elevate theory" as I believe it's simply a matter of good players, playing good. No great QB, including the GOAT ever won a Superbowl with a mediocre or shitty team. However, some great teams won a SB with a mediocre QB. Hopefully Stafford is a guy who can produce some inspiration on the offense and that will be enough.

Just basing off that tweet/Vid...

So if McVay with his new toy,,,

If he doesnt get the Offense back to scoring 32.9 or better...

Plus he needs to get this team no worst than 11-3 record...

Then makes it to the NFC championship game,,, no let me change that to at least make it to the SB...

If he can't do all three, I'll will consider it a bust... JMO...

TB12 didn't make it easier for fanbases of teams trying find those final pieces to get them over the hump and win a Lombardi did he? How many times have teams gone "all in" only to fall flat but nope not ol' Tom. No, he actually pulls it off. So now here we sit with our brand new toy and think "hey it happened for Tampa, surely it can happen for us" Dangerous thinking but that what we do right? We set ourselves up for the SB or Bust ultimatum. Added pressure of SoFi hosting next year as well.

This move was a win. Not because of the predictive outcomes of records or stats for either team involved but because it corrected a failed gamble made by the Rams. They bet on that Goff would continue to ascend and by signing early, will have gotten themselves a bargain as the Mahomes and Watsons's were coming up and the cost for top tier QB was only going up. Hopefully they learn....but they won't. This move was a win because it showed us fans that even when the optics look bad, this team will make the move to try and get better. If we are going to go down, at least try to be swinging for the fences.

Schrager is spot on. McVay looked around the league and saw Rodgers, Mahomes. Allen, Brees, Wilson, Tannehill, Brady and lord knows who else playing great. He sees most of them, with the exception of Rodgers and Mahomes doing great things with offenses he believes aren't in the same league as his.

So he looks at JG and concludes he's not there. Eventually he could be but not now. He wants to win now. Every year. Stafford becomes available, he meets him in Cabo and is convinced MS is on board, so they do the deal.

Can't second guess a guy who's had his team there every year. BUT....he still sees the O line as an issue so he also cans Kromer. He's got what he's wanted, so yes, anything short of a Superbowl has to be failure (underachievement) and I'm sure he would agree.

Now that he has everything he's wanted ........and there's nobody left to throw under the bus.....Wade is gone.....Bones is gone.....Kromer is gone.......it's time to put up or shut up AND I don't want to hear "I need to put our guys in better position to win" EVER AGAIN.

Kershaw:

Have you talked to Matthew Stafford at all about him coming to play for the Rams?

I texted him and just said, “I hope this is what you wanted and welcome. I hope it’s exactly what you and your family wanted to happen.”

What advice would you have for another Texas kid moving to L.A.?

Oh, he doesn’t need my advice. He’s gonna do great. I don’t have any advice other than to just have fun with it. He’s coming into a great situation there, so I’m excited to watch the Rams. I’ve kind of been a Lions fan for the last few years, and now I get to jump on the Rams bandwagon. So I’m excited for that.
