Wherefore art thou, Gurley?

D'Marco Farr wrote:that's the most extended soundbite i've ever heard out of sean mcvay, answering one question, i mean really, it was an extended soundbite, so that right there tells me there's concern but not too much...

me: has d'marco ever listened to mcvay respond to a question before? :D

anyway, d'marco seems to go back and forth throughout as opposed to just leaving at "yes there's a concern regardless of what mcvay and others are saying". or better put, d'marco seems to set up shop in both camps - yes there's concern and no, this will not keep todd gurley from being todd gurley (which of course begs the question, if it's nothing that will prevent gurley from being gurley, why the concern?).

farr: "... but i remember marshall faulk, his knee was worse than mine and my knee retired me, and he played five years after me... so you can play a little bit dinged, i heard rumors that curtis martin played without an acl, yeah, and he went to the hall of fame, so i mean guys can play through this, guys can play through knees. but just going back to your original point saying that it's not a concern, that's just not true, there's obviously an issue there, but saying tood gurley is not going to be todd gurley because of it, that's wrong, todd can play through this, and i'm glad he's going through a body transformation, tony gonzalez, hall of famer, will tell other tight ends to lose weight, every year lose 5 pounds, it's better for you to lose weight as a football player, you don't have to be massive to play this game at a high level..."

so tg's slated to chat with the media after tomorrow's mini-camp opener? ha ha, should be interesting!

reporter: todd, it's been reported that you have arthritis in your knee, that it's degenerative, and that you were injured last season, more than most thought, more than what was reported, in fact it's been reported that you were injured in the season opener and played injured all season, including the postseason, which is why many have said you were ineffective in the super bowl, why your number wasn't called more often, and that if you were indeed healthy you would have played a much bigger role in both the saints game and the super bowl, and while it's true that coach mcvay has you said you were fine, and you've said you were fine, i'm sure you can understand the concern that fans have, that the media have, so if you had to describe how you feel, how you felt all of last season, how you felt in the postseason, how you're feeling right now, if you had describe, let's say on a scale from hurt to feeling good, compared to last season after the season opener, against the raiders, and then after the eagles game, which caused you to miss the next two games, and keeping in mind that you were never shown on the injury report before that, even though it was reported that you were injured in the season opener, some say bad enough to give the rams their money back, but not enough to show on injury report until the cardinals game, which was the first game you missed after the eagles game, and very recently a rams insider reported that there is indeed concern about your knee, that of course there is, which is why you haven't been at ota's, but the same source also said it's nothing that would keep todd gurley from being todd gurley this season, but there's concern nonetheless, and some have said you're losing weight, you want to play at a lighter weight, can you speak to this?

gurley: man, i'm feelin' good, i'm feelin' good man.

internet: gurley continues to be evasive about his arthritic knee.

This thing will get over analyzed to death with people on both sides of the knee question. I’m already sick of it and we’ve got 3 months to go before Gurley actually plays. Three months of posters telling each other they don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s like an old Miller Lite commercial. “Less filling, no tastes great”

But isn't that true? We don't know. We can't know unless we have an inside source named Todd Gurley. The closest I can come is my daughter's boyfriend is from Tarboro and people in Tarboro who know Gurley, claim he's fine. Truth is, nobody....not the media, not the fans, not the friends in his hometown......will know if he's fine until he plays. So NOBODY really knows what they're talking about when they claim he's damaged goods or not.

If Gurley was reported as having a discrete injury (torn ligament, broken bone, etc.) then, as long as the standard recovery time was less than the time between now and the start of the season, most people would not be making an issue of his situation. He'd just be like Cam Newton, or Carson Wentz, or even Cooper Kupp... a guy who was injured who is expected to be back. Its a story that the general public and talking heads can understand and process.

They have a much harder time processing a situation where there is no identified discrete injury (apart from the one suffered in college) but, instead, there are (reportedly) ongoing symptoms with a nonspecific etiology. With a condition like that, there's no simple date of injury/date of treatment/recovery time matrix that the public and talking heads can refer to.

I think its clear at this point that words don't matter. No matter what Gurley and the team say, the doubters will continue to "yes, but.... " anything positive.

There are doubters and there are believers.

If you want to hear doubters just listen to the media, if you want believers just read this message board.

And after you do that, you’ll still have to wait 3 months to see it, either way.

And if the believes are right they’ll say it was pretty obvious months ago, while the doubters make excuses or ignore what they had said. And vice versa.

And as Sinatra said: I never let it get me down, cause this fine old world keeps spinning around.

Minicamp starts today. Steve Wyche made it sound like Gurly might be on the field, Vinny doesn't think so...
