Jordy Nelson released by the Raiders.

Here's my thinking on this...

Jared Goff really missed having Kupp as his security blanket in the middle of the field. While Josh Reynolds was reasonably productive, he is not a slot guy, and his catch % (55.7%) was very low compared to Kupp's (72.7%).

Nelson could be a very good fit to fill Kupp's role (Nelson had a catch % of 71.6% last year) in the (hopefully unlikely) event that Kupp is not ready for the start of the season, or gets hurt again. At his age, I'd think we could get him for peanuts, and he'd likely be happy to move down the coast from Oakland to play for a contender.

Thoughts?

I like it.

Plus, if we sign Clay Matthews and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and TJ Lang, and re-sign Sam Shields, we could make it a clean sweep.

Nelson has a very good work ethic ... and doesn't get caught up in petty BS that younger players often do. He gives every practice rep 100% and never takes a play off.

Nevertheless, he has lost a step and can't cut his routs as sharp as he used to.

Was he ever a slot receiver though...? I was always under the impression that he's played on the outside all this time. :?2:

Earlier in his career, he played outside. Later on, he became a very good slot receiver:

I like him. He may have lost half a step but he knows how to run routes. Wasn't very long ago we had receivers who didn't even know what routes were.

If Nelson was on the Raiders roster tomorrow, his $3 mill roster would have been fully guaranteed. ... Considering the two major WR signings this week, there really wasn't time to work out a new contract with Nelson.

Though a new contract with the Raiders is speculated to be in the makings by members of the media, my sources have not been able to confirm or deny this.

The Raiders have a couple of younger, more dynamic vets on the fringes, and the overpaid Seth Roberts is still on the roster (I love Seth, Mr. Clutch, but he is a liability when it comes to blocking) .... not to mention the 2018 7th round pick Marcell Ateman has shown a HUGE potential.

If the Raiders let Ateman go, I hope the Rams pick him up. He is a pure Red-Zone receiver with natural rebound skills.

Nelson will be a work-ethic asset for any team he joins. He will not be a bad pickup. Sadly for Nelson, an up-and-comer young player can produce as much for less money than the minimum vet salary.
