Rams 7 Round Mock (Version 1.0)

I'll do several of these between now and draft weekend. This one is the most speculative, as we don't know who the Rams will retain/sign/allow to depart in free agency.

For the purposes of this mock, I'm going to make these speculative presumptions:

1. That the Rams will be awarded two compensatory picks in Round 3, giving them 3 total picks, along with a 7th round compensatory picks. That would mean that the Rams would have at least one pick in every round except for Round 2.

2. I'm presuming that Andrew Whitworth returns and the Rams retain Rodger Saffold, Dante Fowler and Cory Littleton. I'm also presuming that Suh OR Brockers will be back (but not both).

3. I'm presuming that the Rams allow Lamarcus Joyner to leave in FA, and release Mark Barron.

With those caveats, here's my first Rams mock:

Round 1: Zach Allen, DE, Boston College
As I'm projecting that only 2 of our 3 starting DL return, this is both a value pick and a hole-filler. Allen is a perfect fit as a 3-4 DE, who has demonstrated both run stuffing (averaged 80 tackles per year in past two) and playmaking (averaged 15 TFL and 5 sacks per year in past two) abilities. I could see him platooning with John Franklin-Myers early and becoming a full time starter in short order.

Round 3: Rock Ya-Sin, CB, Temple
Good size (6'1, 190) and very physical, Ya-Sin has the press coverage skills necessary to give pass rushers the time to get home. The Rams look set at CB for 2019 with Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib and Nickel Robey-Coleman all signed, but they need to prepare for the future. Ya-Sin could be a riser who is gone by the Rams' pick, but if he's there, I'd grab him.

Round 3: Mike Bell, S, Fresno State
With Lamarcus Joyner likely gone, the Rams will need to look at the safety position. The first thing that jumps off the page with Bell (and distinguishes him from Joyner) is size (6'3, 200). He also, in a lot of ways, reminds me of John Johnson - a guy who might not show elite traits in the Combine and workouts, but is a disciplined and well-rounded football player.

Round 4: Michael Deiter, OL, Wisconsin

Deiter is a versatile OL prospect who probably would project as an OG but has experience throughout the OL. As the Rams transition from Whitworth and John Sullivan, pieces like this will be important.

Round 5: Joe Jiles-Harris, ILB, Duke
Productive run stopper with good range.

Round 6: John Ursua, WR, Hawaii
Slot receiver understudy for Cooper Kupp.

Round 7: De'Andre Walker, EDGE, Georgia
Developmental pass-rusher.

You can't develop pass rushers. Either they are or not. Pass rushers are guys you get in the early rounds.

Odd that you would bump my Mock 1.0 when I have already posted Version 2.0 (Version 3.0 coming soon!)

As for pass rushers, I disagree. Many pass rushers need time to develop when they reach he NFL. Look at Dee Ford...5.5 total sacks in his first 2 years, 25 in next 3 (despite missing 10 games in 2017). Demarcus Lawrence...9 sacks in his first 32 games, 25 in his last 32 games. DeForest Buckner...9 sacks in first 31 games, 12 last year. Just a few examples.

There are cases that some players are better than expected, but it is rare. Some of your players probably won't be there, when I post my NFL Mock, all 7 rounds. I should be getting it posted by the weekend.
