here's a look at how mcvay / goff have fared against differently ranked defenses (in offensive points allowed) since they joined forces in 2017.

so, for example, against the top 5 ranked defenses the rams are 3-7 and have averaged 16.7 offensive points per game, while goff has booked an 83.0 qb rating and backs have rushed for a 4.3 average.... conversely, against the bottom 5 defenses, the rams are 9-0 and have averaged 33.3 offensive points per game, while goff has booked a 112.3 qb rating and backs have averaged a 4.2 average:

looking at the above, the rams haven't seen much of a drop off in offensive production against defenses ranked outside of the top 10 when comparing 2017-2018 to 2019-2020, but against top 10 defenses it's a different story, they've seen a big drop off.

in 2017-18 Los Ramos had Saffold & Sullivan manning the Rams Interior OL.

In 2019-20, we don't.

It may actually be that simple.

As in, play calling, depth of routes, ability to stay with the run game/stay on schedule, 3rd down conversion rate. What we have on the OL is what we have. It is incumbent upon MCV to scheme/play call accordingly and for the skills group to execute - now, THAT it too simplistic I know . Yet, this is exacerbated against top-10 D's.

My observations have been that 6-1 has not been employed like it was in late 2018 and all of 2019, frequency wise. What have you seen? I bet we see some of that front Monday night, especially in man to man coverage situations.

The dip from 5.2 ypc to 3.9 ypc is significant. Is that the OL? Is that the RBs? Is it both?

In 2019 and 2020 against top 10 defenses our ypc were 2.4 (Balt), 3.8 (Pitt), 5.0 (SF), 3.0 (SF), 3.2 (Chi) and 5.9 (SF). Ironically the two times our ypc were above 4.0, Todd Gurley was not on the field. Now I'm not necessarily blaming Gurley's performances, just that he wasn't there to "key on". We lost both of those games anyway and the one win (Chicago) was because their offense was worse than ours. About the one game this year (SF) it could be argued running more than 9 times in the first half might have helped. Of course missing an open Kupp for a TD and Kupp dropping a TD right before the next play ended in a pick also would have helped. I think McVay likes the fact defenses can't key on a bell cow, which may be one reason he limits Henderson slightly. I hope we'll see BOTH Henderson and Akers get touches against Chicago.

I disagree. And I break things down differently.

I see it as:

A. 2017 + 1st half of 2018.
B. 2nd half of 2018 + 2019
C. 2020

I see the biggest difference between A & C and set B this way--set B has various kinds of OL issues, whereas sets A & C have solid OL play.

The biggest difference is, we had a superbowl caliber team before 2019. Now we don't. We should have a playoff caliber team but there are several teams in the NFC we can't beat. Life as such in the NFL. Still a lot better than "Same Ole Sorry Ass Rams".
